Two Days' Notice.
300 Guests.
We Said Yes.

When the catering for Stepping Stone House's Sleep Under the Stars fundraiser needed covering with two days to go, we stepped in. We served dinner on the Friday night and breakfast the next morning for around 300 people at Barangaroo, with vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options, from one truck that stayed on site overnight.

Key Takeaways

  • With two days to go, Stepping Stone House needed catering sorted for their Sleep Under the Stars fundraiser. We took it on.
  • We covered two services, dinner on the Friday night and breakfast on the Saturday morning, for around 300 guests.
  • Around one in five meals catered for vegan, vegetarian and gluten free needs.
  • Our truck bumped in on the Friday afternoon and stayed on site overnight, ready for the breakfast service.

The Event

Sleep Under the Stars is the flagship fundraiser for Stepping Stone House, a charity that supports children and young people experiencing homelessness. Hundreds of people, a mix of corporates, families and community groups, sleep out for the night at Stargazer Lawn in Barangaroo to raise money and awareness.

It is a big, meaningful night with a lot of moving parts. Food is a huge part of keeping everyone warm and looked after, both for dinner and for breakfast the next morning.

The Challenge

With two days to go, Stepping Stone House needed catering organised quickly and reliably. This was not a simple lunch either. It meant a hot dinner service on the Friday evening, then a full breakfast service early the next morning, with around one in five meals catering for vegan, vegetarian and gluten free needs.

On top of that, a Barangaroo site comes with strict access, an induction and paperwork, and once a vehicle is in position it stays put overnight. There was no room to be slow or unsure.

What We Did

We said yes and got moving straight away. Because we had worked at Barangaroo before, the site paperwork and the bump in were familiar ground, so there was no learning curve to slow us down.

We planned dinner as burgers and chips, breakfast as bacon and egg rolls, and built the dietary options in from the start rather than as an afterthought. The truck bumped in on the Friday afternoon, traded dinner, sat tight overnight, and was back on for breakfast at first light. With the food sorted, the team could get on with running the night.

In Their Words
